Women Storytellers You MUST Follow

I am sure you are wondering “Why are you starting this “Women storytellers you must follow” series. First of all, I love doin random challenges for no reason like the 27 Creative Lessons By 27 Challenge.  Secondly, in the spirit of me learning how to be a better storyteller, one of the best ways to do that is to have examples and learn from others.

If you are somebody who is trying to grow your craft of storytelling, I am hoping this “Women Storytellers You Must Follow” list can serve as inspiration.  Since it’s Black History Month and I’m Black not the opposite side  (if you watched pt 1, you’ll know what I am referencing hehe), I am starting with Black women. I will continually add unto this list for Women Crush Wednesdays so look out for a new video every Wednesday. If you want to follow along the episodes, check out my youtube playlist here.

I am choosing people not based on follower count but instead on storytelling style. So if there is someone you feel like deserves to be uplifted, feel free to shoot me a dm and let me know 🙂

1. Amani Richardson

women storytellers you MUST follow
  • If you are looking for a good “living alone” series, she is the one to follow. She has really taught me the power of a good voiceover and transitions
  • You can tell that she has put a lot of time in growing her craft. It genuinely feels like you are watching a movie.
  • Her vlogs be like an hour long which I am very IMPRESSED by because how she is editing those hour long videos with such great quality? This is the goal – to make hour long videos that are entertaining from beginning to end.

2. Eni Popoola

  • I find Eni’s editing to be very unique. She does a good job of blending her passion for fashion & beauty with storytelling. This is something I haven’t seen quite often in the online space
  • She shows spurts of storytelling on her instagram. But if you wanna see the depths of her storytelling style, you gotta check out her youtube channel
  • She has taught me the beauty of slowing down. Storytelling doesn’t have to be fast paced with a lot of glitz and glam. It can be slow, calm & classy which perfectly matches her own style & presence

3. Skylar Marshai

  • Skylar is her own genre. I don’t really know anybody that does creativity and storytelling in the way that she does it.
  • She has taught me the beauty of sticking out and being okay with it. She has the most creative nails always and her storytelling style is one of a kind

  • I always leave Nneka’s videos inspired and motivated to dream and create. Her work makes me want to grow as a storyteller.
  • She has a series called “Letters From A Stranger” where she is making 100 short films answering questions. It’s amazing so please run and do NOT walk to her videos.
  • She has taught me that videos of depth still serve a purpose online

5. Life Of Riza

Women Storytellers You MUST Follow
  • If you want a good TV show, watch life of riza. You can tell she has worked on her craft to tell you good life lesson via vlogging
  • Coincidentally she just hit 1 million subscribers on YouTube – which is so well deserved.
  • She is essentially a filmmaker who happens to be on youtube. I have learned so much about filmmaking through her style of editing on youtube
  • Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@LifeOfRiza/videos

6. Gabby Le

  • Wow Gabby videos have you at peace and wanting to romanticize your life
  • I feel like her slow relaxing pace mirrors Life of Riza’s slow pace but in a very different way.
  • She feel very human and real which gives me peace while I watch. Her cinematic shots be teaaa too.

8. Kaiti Yoo

women storytellers you must follow
  • Featuring someone that I’ve actually met in real life and can confirm she is the same person in real life as online which makes this feature even more special
  • Kaiti’s work carries so much depth and intention. She is a supreme storyteller and I feel like if you wanna leave a video thinking a little more – this is the girl for you

9. This Is For The Late Bloomers

women storytellers you must follow
  • When I first ran into her page, I was confused of why youtube didn’t recommend her to me earlier because I had my Late Bloomer Diaries at the time. And her work is so cinematic-y and authentic.
  • You can tell she has a gentle, kind soul and I am glad youtube finally started pushing out her videos because it is well deserved!
  • She gives me the vibe of a normal girlie pop like ourselves who loves capturing life with storytelling and film in such a beautiful way

10. Brittney Janae

women storytellers you must follow
  • I wanna be Brittney Janae when I grow up for real! Wowww one of the few Black women filmmakers on youtube
  • She actually made a “ 5 Black filmmakers on Youtube You Need To Follow”  that I recommend checking out
  • Brittney is a PRO! She is legit for real and does this as a career so she gives you real insiders into being a director of photography and cinematography. To finally see somebody who looks like me especially in a predominately white male centered space is a breathe of fresh air.

And that’s it y’all! The end of an era – a 10 part series featuring women storytellers you MUST follow! It’s so bittersweet because I have loved this series so much but also felt like it was time to close. Maybe I will pick it up in the future? I guess we’ll see.

But for now look forward to the youtube video releasing this sunday. In light of Black women history month this April, I plan on featuring Black women storytellers you must follow  – including the people on this list plus a few others I didn’t get to feature so stay tuned!
