The Most Creative Braids I’ve Ever Had: A Lagos Braiding Review | Hair as Art Ep. 11

I definitely just the most creative braids in Lagos for my new 2026 rule. Basically in 2026, every braid style has to be creative. No exception. The times that I am not rocking out and loving on my natural hair, the braids have to be unique and stylish. So what better way to end the year than to get the first hairstyle that I will walk into 2026 with the Kipetaka hairstyle from the Bestileo people of Madagascar. So for episode 11 of hair as art series, I am spilling the tea behind how I got this style
How were the services?
This was done at Funky Signature. If you are unfamiliar with Lagos – there is mainland and island. This salon is on mainland but they also offer home services. They usually have multiple braiders working on your head at once. Be mindful of what day you choose though. For example, on Sunday the earlier you can get there is 12pm. Therefore, your day may be end later than you would have liked.
Would I go again?
Yes definitely. Although these braids were tighter than I am used to, the ladies were still mindful of how I felt. They were asking me to let them know if I want anything or if they were braiding tight. In true Nigerian fashion, saying “sorry o” when they were hurting me. I appreciated their courtesy and I can’t say that about everywhere.
How were the braids done?
I am going to tell you what I saw from my perspective. My inspiration came from the instagram video they posted here that my friend sent me. When I got to the salon, I was told that that hair was done for a brand who hadn’t released all those colors just yet. So we had to get think about colors that would still work so I could get me some creative braids in Lagos.
Instead of the bright green lime that you see in that video/pic, they blended green, blonde (613) and burgundy (350) for the first part of the braid. When they got a quarter way, they added only blonde (613). Then for the last quarter added in burgundy (350) only.
At the end, they rolled up the braid. Since the red is on the end, it ended up being in the inside. Pins/thread was attached so the circle stuck together. My hair is also not the same length because there are three layers. So essentially they made 3 layers that are each shorter than the previous one
How long did it take?
About 8 hours. This was probably my main complaint – how long it took. You might be thinking “8 hours? Girl that ain’t bad”. Mind you, at the beginning 2 people were working on my head but the by the end 8-10 people were helping. It felt like I was getting hair surgery. The fact that it took that long despite so many people working on it shows you how complex this style is. This is another reason why feel like it is one of the most creative braids in Lagos if not the world.
Not gonna lie with y’all – that day I learned that beauty is truly pain. By the end I was fighting for my life. Head was in pain from tight braids and so many people pulling on the braids at once. I was hangry and tired BUT it was worth it. I am not mad at them about it because like the owner said “It is a work of art”. In fact at some point the owner said, “we need to find a shortcut to do this style” which cracked me up internally.
I don’t even think it could have been completed any faster. In fact, I feel like in most places it would take even longer because you would have less hands. I share all of this because you need to be mentally prepared by the reality that this style will take time. I didn’t realize this hence my attitude near the end but I should have known because of how amazing it looks.
Last Words
Amazement. I am just amazed because this has to be by far the most creative braids in Lagos – if not the the coolest braids I have ever gotten on planet earth thus far. Another fun thing about this style is that it is versatile. The owner said that when I get tired of it, I can dip the hair into hot water which would allow me to untangle the circles. So maybe that will be my next style? We shall see!
