Best Video Editing Softwares for Beginners (Honest Pros & Cons)

As part of my video editing for amateurs by an amateur series, in my opinion these are the best video editing softwares for beginners. I give a much easier breakdown on my instagram here and can check out my camera settings article here.

Davinci Resolve

If I were to go back in time would have used DaVinci. Although I love the software that I currently use (which I will discuss later), this software is free and has amazing color grading features. I have a friend who uses DaVinci and his work is amazing so although I haven’t used it I’ve seen it’s positive effects. There is a studio version that costs $295 but the free version is more than sufficient. A con is that it is more advanced, so it would require a learning curve to get used to it especially as a beginner who has never edited before.

iMovie

I started out with iMovie and it was great. Although I don’t think it has the best editing or advanced features, I feel like its one of the best video editing softwares for beginners because it’s easy to use. If you are just starting out with editing, I recommend this since it’s free and easy. However, it only works on apple devices and if you want to grow more advanced in editing, eventually you will want to purchase another software.

Capcut

To be honest, I am not a fan of this app but I still put it as one of the best video editing softwares for beginners because it is so user friendly. I currently mainly use it captions because their automatic captions is time saver. It also easy to use on your phone and for quick edits but if you want to grow more advanced as an editor it isn’t the best app for that. Although the free version comes with a lot, there is an extra cost for a lot of their advanced features.

Final Cut Pro

Maybe I am bias since I use final cut pro but this is my favorite of the best video editing softwares for beginners. I view it as a “more advanced” iMovie. You can do so much more features that iMovie is limited in like moving the text around, color grading, etc. 2 cons though is that it is only available on apple devices and the cost. Its $299.99 but the student/teacher cost is $199.99. But once you get it once you won’t need to purchase it again.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Not gonna lie with all the posts I was seeing online advertising this I thought I was missing out. So before writing this article I started searching online but a lot of the reviews were negative. From the costs being $23 per month (or $67 per month with creative cloud) to complaints about how advanced it is and not that great has me doubting it. One pro is that you can purchase it with creative cloud which comes with indesign, photoshop & illustrator. Edits also come out good but beware of the price!!
