Tips To Host A Birthday Dinner By Yourself

I love picking up new creative projects and hosting is starting to become one of my favorite creative hobbies. As I shared here, the Renaissance Conference Sparked my creativity for real. It challenged me to just do more creative stuff for fun. So I recently released a youtube birthday dinner video here with the behind the scenes of organizing my 27th birthday dinner. So I want to share tips on how to host a birthday dinner by yourself.
1. Choose a Party Theme: Dress attire & vibe
First begin thinking what type of vibe do you want. Do you want color theme? A style theme? For my birthday dinner, I said “dress like you are gonna meet the Obamas” to signal that I wanted people to dress fancy. It was quite cute though because people thought I was saying you should wear a suit so some people came with suits on. Definitely be creative and have fun with it. Remember it’s your day so do what you want.
2. Make Invites and Menu On Canva
In true Naija fashion, I wanted to be extra so of course I had to make menu. People asked me where I made it at and my answer is Canva. Canva is an amazing resource with templates. Then with the templates you can also add images & cartoons, change fonts and make it your own.
3. Shop Online/Walmart/Michaels
One of my biggest regrets and one of the key tips to host a birthday dinner by yourself is to shop online. Or else you will be like me in my YouTube video running around trying to find supplies on your own. But since I am so last minute it was too late to order online to get it on time. But if you do have to shop in person, I recommend Walmart and Michaels since party city is closed and especially if you wanna be on a budget.
4.Have A Bad Weather Back Up Plan
So yeah I didn’t think about this but definitely think about what you are going to do if the weather gets bad. I didn’t take this into account and then had to improvise last minute. But if you want to do an outdoor event always think about if there is an indoor option close by or at another location in case the weather switches up.
5. Support Local Black-Owned Businesses > big corporations first
I am such an advocate for supporting local, small business and especially Black-owned ones. Because oftentimes these local businesses need all the support and love they can get.
6. Don't Be Afriad to Ask For Help
I made this article about hosting by yourself not because I think you host a birthday dinner by yourself but because I don’t think you should. In fact, if people are asking if they can help you say YES! I had people who did but in combination with me not planning for bad weather conditions in time and also with me being hyper-independent I didn’t pick up the offer.
But it’s your birthday, so you should celebrate yourself well and take the load off your plate. So hit up your community to help you!
