3 Easy Lighting Setups for Better Storytelling Editing

Lighting for storytelling editing? I know you are confused because you would think that storytelling editing is just about what you are doing on the computer. In order to get the color grading that you want, you must have good lighting. It don’t matter if you use my color grading tips, if the lighting is low it won’t turn out how you want. So here are some tips that have helped me:
1. Natural Light
Hold my hand as I say this. You don’t need to buy something to improve your lighting for storytelling editing. Natural light is your BEST friend! In fact, it is the best option. I would recommend sitting in front of a window where natural light is facing you. You don’t wanna shoot with the window behind you because it will make your image dark. If you are like me though and you don’t have access to great natural light, consider #2 and #4.
2. Soft Box
If you are like me and need to oftentimes film at night or just need an extra lighting source, I would consider buying a soft box. Now there are MANY options out there. I don’t got a light box review for y’all but I do have a suggestion for a cheaper option. I use the Neewer Lightbox that comes with 2 lights. I bought this years ago when it was around $60-$70 but now it’s $100. Another cheaper almost equivalent option is the Skytex SoftBox.
There are a few things I like about the newer package. For example, I keep the foam packages that the light bulbs are kept In so that when I travel, I can use the foam packages to keep the lights secure. I also like that that comes with a back that I can use to travel with my lights and the set up is pretty simple
3. Sun Lamp
You are probably surprised to see this option under lighting for storytelling editing. I started using my sun lamp for seasonal depression (iykyk) but then realized it was great for lighting in videos. I use the Carex Day-Light Classic Plus Sunlight Therapy Lamp.I usually use this when I film in my bathroom so I don’t have to bring my big light boxes in the bathroom. The sun lamp is a 2 in one device. It helps with seasonal depression AND lighting setup.
